Every flying game is really about one quantity: energy. You have exactly as much as your speed and your height give you, thrust adds it slowly, and drag takes it away constantly. Every good decision in Updraft is a deliberate trade between the two forms.

Speed is the account, altitude is the savings

Lift scales with the square of airspeed, so a fast aircraft can climb and a slow one cannot, no matter how hard you pull. Pulling harder when slow is precisely the wrong instinct and it is the most common way runs end. If you need height and you are slow, lower the nose first, let the speed build, and climb after. It feels backwards and it is correct.

Fly the window, not the aeroplane

The altitude windows are the score. Beginners chase the aircraft's current position; good players fly the window's centre and arrive already stable. Start your climb or descent early enough that you are level before the window arrives, because a window entered in a climb is a window you will fly straight out of the top of.

Every turn is a descent you agreed to

Banking tilts the lift vector, so a turn always costs vertical performance. Two consequences worth internalising:

  • Add a little nose-up as you roll in and take it out as you roll out, or the turn quietly costs you a hundred feet.
  • Do not turn and climb at once when slow. That is exactly the low-speed, high-angle-of-attack corner where the wing quits.

Respect the buffet

The airframe shakes before it stalls. That is not decoration — it is the only warning you get, and it arrives with enough time to act. Ease the stick the moment you feel it. Players who push through the buffet get the full break: lift collapse, a hard nose-down pitch, and a recovery that costs far more height than they were reaching for.

Throttle is a strategic control, not a trim

Thrust adds energy slowly, so a throttle change pays off over ten seconds rather than one. Push the power up before a climb or a turn, not during it, and pull it back on a descent so you do not overspeed. Leaving it at one setting all flight gives up the cheapest performance in the game.

Learn the route, because it never changes

The legs, the bearings and the window sequence are generated from the date, so everybody flies the identical flight all day. Which turn follows which window is knowledge, and knowledge is worth more here than reflexes. Two practice runs to learn where the course changes are will beat any amount of stick skill on a route you are reading for the first time.

Which view to actually use

Chase is the easiest for judging altitude windows and is the right default. The cockpit is genuinely harder — you are flying on instruments — but the attitude indicator and vertical-speed needle give finer control than eyeballing a silhouette, so it is where the best times come from. The map is not for flying; it is for one glance to see which way the next leg turns.

What a good flight looks like

Reaching Singapore at all is a solid result — a pilot who never touches the controls is down inside twelve seconds. Getting there having held most of the windows, without a stall, is a strong day. Doing it from the cockpit is the ceiling.

Energy is the only currency. Trade it deliberately, fly the window rather than the aircraft, and treat every turn as a descent you agreed to.
